LE FORESTE: UN TESORO DA PRESERVARE
“...Salvare
vita.“. Così cantano i

Aria: le foreste producono l'ossigeno che respiriamo;
Acqua: trattengono l'acqua e ci proteggono dalla desertificazione;
Terra: stabilizzano il suolo e prevengono catastrofi naturali;
Clima: contrastano l'effetto serra sequestrando grandi quantità di carbonio;
Vita: sono l'habitat essenziale per circa i due terzi delle specie viventi terrestri;
Popoli e culture: attutiscono la povertà, assicurando la sopravvivenza a 1,2 miliardi di persone che le abitano;
Ricchezze nascoste: forniscono cibo, fibre, medicine.
Ci vuoi aiutare?

FORESTS: A TREASURE TO PRESERVE
“...Saving
forests means saving human kind, because man can't live between iron
and concrete, there'll be no peace, no true love untill man learns to
respect life.” These are the lyrics Nomadi sing in their song
“Remember about Chico” (Nomadi is one of the oldest and most
famous Italian band, translator's note).
Chico Mendes – Brazilian, rubber tapper (seringueiros) and trade union leader - is really one of those men we should always remember as he persued the ideal of cohabitation between man and forest, untill he was murdered on 22nd December 1988 due to his convictions. Through the “empetas” (nonviolent demonstrations against the exploitation and destruction of Amazon's rainforest) Chico showed the entire world how important it is to preserve forests as main natural resource for the Planet and its population.
Chico's deep convinction is contained in a wonderful quote: “At first I thought I was fighting to save rubber trees, then I thought I was fighting to save the Amazon rainforest. Now I realise I am fighting for humanity.”
Too many political and economic interests make us forget about how important it is that forests survive. Blind and wild deforestation not only leads to severe damages in the regions where it is carried out, but it affects the entire Planet and all the creatures it guests, human kind included.
But man has not understood yet or just doesn't want to understand that damaging the Earth also means affecting human kind itself.
In its presumption and supposed superiority man does not understand that our Planet is at the edge of an abyss and we – with our actions - are the only ones who can profoundly change the devastation that we have contributed to create.
Greenhouse effect, desertification, extinction of native vegetable and animal species, natural disasters are all the devastating effects of deforestation.

By reporting a
short paragraph from the website www.salvaleforeste.it
it is easy to understand which are the benefits and advantages
forests bring to our life and to the Planet's sustanance.
Air: Forests produce the oxygen we breath;
Water: Forests retain water and protect us from desertification;
Soil: Forests stabilize the soil and prevent natural disasters;
Climate: Forests contrast the greenhouse effect by imprisoning huge quantities of carbon dioxide;
Life: Forests are the main habitat for almost 2/3 of all living species;
People and culture: Forests reduce poverty by granting the survival of 1,2 billion people living in them;
Hidden resources: Forests supply food, fibers and medicines.
Despite all this, man keeps persuing his own economic interests and threatening forests' survival: logging industry, paper industry, plantations, monocultivations and agricultural areas, pastures, deforesting to build streets and infrastuctures ecc... these are deforestation's main goals. And don't forget that most forests are in Third World countries, where deforestation also severly affects native populations' life, as it deprives them of resources essencial for their survival.
2011 has been declared “International Year of Forests” by the General Assembly of United Nations with the hope we can find a way to sustain forests all over the world and to support their preservation. It is necessary that everybody plays their own role, spreading the importance of forests' preservation as much as possible, educating our children to forests conservation and sustaining – also economically if possible – reforestation projects.
ISF Italian Support in the International Year of Forests challenges you to start up a reforestation project in your own garden.
In Italy and in other european countries the Forestry Deparment gives away plants and trees for free. In the USA many schools do it as well so that every child can have his own tree to grow. Check out with your local Forestry Department and your school and begin to help! You don't have to go far away: a small corner of your garden can make the difference too. Do you want to help us?
