As we often said, we've decided to dedicate the first part of this new year to water, this incredible resource not accessibe to all. The decision to talk about this issue comes from a variety of interesting projects we have, from personal experiences in places where water is never enough, from the fact that the problem is dear to us and that both Ian and the ISF are often committed to raise awareness about it.
Here below, you'll find projects and articles all somehow related to water.

PROGETTO: "Lasciaci la Tua Gocciolina"
Dedicato a: Tutti i Bimbi del Pianeta!
_“Scende
MANDATECI I VOSTRI PENSIERINI O I VOSTRI DISEGNI SULL’ACQUA! LI PUBBLICHEREMO QUI!
Noi pubblicheremo tutto!

PROJECT: "Leave Your Little Drop"
Dedicated to: All the Kids of the Planet!
_“A happy little drop runs down the
mountain, and waters everything. It jokes and skips whenever it sees a sheep. Finally,
it reaches the river, light and peaceful. Like a feather, it gets carried away
into the endless sea. But the sun, with its heat, turns it into steam, and from the cloud, the rain falls down taking
back the little drop on the mountain top”. (Poem written by the students of an
Italian primary school)
Did you know this endless trip of a water drop?
Most of water present on our Planet is in seas, rivers and lakes.
Due to the Sun, this water gets warm and evaporates, thus turning into steam and rising up to the sky.
At a certain height, steam meets cold air and condenses, turning into water drops which join together and form the clouds.
Through atmospheric precipitation, the water contained into the clouds falls down on the Earth’s surface in form of rain, snow or hail.. and everything restarts again.
If water did not take this big “tour” continuously – the so-called water cycle - life on Earth would be impossible.
Did you ever think about the different forms in which water is present on the Earth?
Where does the water pouring out of your tap come from and go to?
It is a very precious element: just think that the amount of water that you use in the morning to wash your face is the same – or maybe neither – of that at disposal of a child in Africa, or even a child living in your same Country but in an area where water fails, or it is present but it is dirty or polluted, or it is wasted!
The water we drink and we use to cook and wash ourselves must be clear and odorless and have a pleasant taste.
It must contain a right amount of mineral salts and must not contain harmful substances and bacteria that are dangerous for our health.
We all should defend this vital substance, which, unfortunately, is not endless!
How often do you come into contact with water in a day?
It is necessary to do something not to waste water when finally it reaches our houses!
There are many ways to save water.
What do you do, for instance? And what would you do if you were a water drop?
SEND US YOUR THOUGHTS OR DRAWINGS ABOUT WATER! WE WILL PUBLISH THEM HERE!
Children always feel magically attracted by this element. Letting them know the importance of water and explaining them the need of a responsible and eco-friendly use of it derives from the wish to offer them various incentives in order to think about its importance, so that they will treat it with attention and respect first of all individually and then collectively, just as water drops joining together.
Therefore, we invite them to send us their works – quotes, poems, brief thoughts or drawings – about their attitude towards water or about the way it influences their everyday life.
This project is aimed to children from all over the world.. if you do not know Italian, you are free to write in English. We will publish everything!

Il Mio Mare: Tre Grossi Problemi
_Sono
- la diminuzione del trasporto di materiale da parte dei fiumi;
- le opere costruite a ridosso del mare;

My Sea: Three Huge Problems
_I was born
in Genoa, a city by the sea. I love sea and I could not live away from it. I am
neither a scientist nor a biologist, but I love nature and I observe it
carefully. My sea is the Ligurian, but
my analysis applies to the Tyrrhenian, the Adriatic and the whole Mediterranean
as well.
The first problem is coastal erosion, that is the surface removal of materials off the coasts due to the sea friction. Indeed, beaches are an environmental system endowed with a very precarious dynamic balance that depends on two phases: erosion and deposit. When this balance breaks, sometimes the sea may deposit a larger amount of materials, so that beaches spread out (deposit).
On the other hand, we may have the opposite phenomenon: the sea may remove a larger amount of materials, so that coasts decrease (erosion).
Unfortunately, nowadays the most common phenomenon is the latter.
The main reasons for the growth in erosion are:
- reduction in the transportation of materials by rivers;
- construction of buildings by the sea;
- urbanization of coastal areas, such as the extension of harbor piers and defense barriers like breakwaters and groins.
I remember that, when I was a child, beaches were far larger. I saw some pictures dating back to the 50ies and witnessing it. Sadly, some of those beaches do not exist any longer! And those that have been able to survive, once were definitely larger and deeper.

_The second
problem is the progressive water warming, which is an issue common to all the
oceans.
Water has got warm steadily for the whole 20th century, and its warming has been increasing after the middle 70ies and even more since the 90ies.
The increase in temperature concerns the deep layers especially. The half-closed Mediterranean basin is an excellent indicator, on a worldwide scale, of the current changes in the whole Earth’s climate.
Every year, the temperature of the deep layer of the Mediterranean Sea increases by 0.002°C, while its salt level increases by 0.001 salinity unit. These changes, which seem so minimal, have been occurring more quickly since 1990 and require a huge amount of heat because of the enormous volumes taken by the sea, especially in its depth.
Also, studies and researches held in Italy (the ISMAR by Cnr in La Spezia) have come to the same conclusions. Moreover, they have confirmed that this tendency has sped up since 2005: within 4 years, salinity has increased, on average, by 0.024, while temperature has increased by 0.042°C. All this is really worrying since it interferes with the delicate balance of the ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea, which, in addition, may have a direct consequence on the Atlantic Ocean: a bigger heat and salt intake from the Mediterranean Sea may possibly interact with the “themohaline” circulation and those mechanisms that keep the Gulf Stream in motion. The “thermohaline” circulation is created by the density of the surface water, which differs from the depth. This way, the deep layers can keep on mixing. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the few basins in the world where a huge “thermohaline” circulation occurs: the dense water (rich in CO2) that is produced in the Gulf of Lion, the Ligurian Sea and the Catalan Basin thanks to the cool and dry continental winds, tends to sink and spread. This way, it starts a process of vertical and horizontal water circulation, which is essential for life. The rise in sea temperature is scientifically demonstrated, but it can also be noticed. During the last years, in the summertime, a very odd phenomenon occurred not only on the Ligurian coasts, but also along the other bays: seaweeds came off the bottom, and, rising to the surface, they putrefied and produced a toxin which is dangerous for breathing. Another factor is the presence of fishes that once were not here, such as the dolphinfish, which used to live off the coasts of Northern Africa and Malta, and the barracuda.

_The third
problem is the pollution caused by fish farming, which was born around 1970 to
satisfy the increasing request for fish and seafood. Fish farming pollutes water with fish food
wastes, by making it greasy and cloudy. Indeed, the fish flour used is rich in
oils and medicines. Fish farming attracts jellyfishes, which, being so
well-fed, become enormous. Last summer, in Apulia, I saw many of them looking
like football balls! Jellyfishes live on plankton, fish eggs and small fry. This way, they deprive the
other fishes of food and break the delicate sea ecosystem! The increase in jellyfishes is also linked to
the climate changes, the water warming and the greater rainfalls, which, as a
consequence, pour freshwater into the sea. In addition, the lack of predators
distorts an important stage of the food chain.
The explosion in the number of jellyfishes may be also due to intensive fishing , which has eliminated sharks and tunas, and to fertilizers, which are poured into the sea. Moreover, the global warming seems to be responsible for the arrival and the proliferation of more than 2,000 different species of jellyfish every year.
Jellyfishes are dangerous when they are alive and polluting when they die. Indeed, they turn into a biomass containing very huge quantities of carbon, which bacteria cannot digest. They expel it in form of CO2, which flows into the atmosphere. This phenomenon is in part responsible for the progressive and worrying sea acidification.
Anyway, there is also environmentally friendly farming that respects the criteria of ichthyic sustainability. So, it is possible to consume safely all the fishes coming from bio farming. By buying bio fish, it is certain that the fish food used had been obtained out of the wastes of the fish food industry, and that the use of medicinal products was very limited.

Renewable Energy Sources: Water
Water is not only an essential resource for our life, but also a renewable and clean energy source.
There are many ways of exploiting its potentiality, and not all of them are modern and technological works.
Indeed, many examples of its use were already present in history. Just think of grain mills, olive grinding stones, fluvial transport of trunks and the functioning of sawmills. However, nowadays water is mainly exploited to produce electric energy. Concerning this, there is a significant datum according to which the 16% of the energy produced worldwide is hydroelectric.
And now, let’s go briefly into details in order to clarify, with some simple notions, the way this process works.
The water which is aimed to be used is contained in mountain basins and held back in dams allowing its storage.
In order to exploit its power, it is necessary to trap it in leaning water mains, so that it can acquire strength and speed during its fall. This way, it reaches with a high pressure the turbine, a sort of big wheel which turns such thrust into mechanical power. In its turn, this power activates the shaft of a generator, which makes a certain number of magnets turn in order to generate a magnetic field and produce electric energy. At this point, transformers increase its voltage so that consumers can use it.
The advantage of this resource consists in the fact that it is an unlimited source which doesn’t produce any waste.
However, there is also the other side of the coin: it needs certain environmental conditions to be used at its best, and power stations cannot be built anywhere. Indeed, one of its limitations is the fact that it requires huge spaces for its storage and the building of dams, which may often have a negative impact upon the ecosystem and the fauna of the place they are built on.
Moreover, this kind of energy may be disadvantageous because it can be used at a short-range only and it requires necessarily extreme falls and drops.

Anyway, there are other forms of water which can be exploited as well: one of these is the sea.
In this case, we deal with tidal stations, which use the change between high and low tide to activate the turbine and the alternator. However, also in this case there are geographical limitations that may interfere with the building of power stations.
Moreover, salted water may corrode the systems.
In addition, methods aimed at producing energy from the great natural temperature ranges of the tropical oceans are in course of study as well.
Indeed, thanks to them it would be possible to generate steam in order to activate the turbine.
An effective alternative consists in solar pools, where water is stored and heated up by the equatorial sun.
This way, it produces the needed steam, which is trapped and channeled immediately.
However, at the moment, the production expenses of these new technologies are still rather high.
To sum up, we can affirm that, though hydroelectric energy alone cannot substitute thermoelectric or nuclear powers, whenever it can be used it is surely a valid and successful integrative energy source.
